What a week

This has been quite the week for democracy. We watched celebrating Americans as news of Osama bin Laden's death was announced. Shortly before that we watched a royal wedding with all the promise of a brighter future for the British royal marriages. We then watched our own country vote in a majority government that everyone criticized for its contempt of democracy for the past five years.
These seem to me to be examples of how humans are as mixed up as ever. We denounce violence and revenge killing while celebrating when "our side" gets even. We put high expectations on two human beings for saving the institution of marriage while the rest of us do what we want with it. Our press and pollsters tell us that no one trusts Stephen Harper enough to give him a majority and the NDP is too far "out there" to ever get close to real governing status.
Basically we don't have a clue.
